The new generic TLD — .XYZ — does not cease to surprise . The leader in the nTLD ranking, .XYZ has gained nearly 2.6 mln registrered names within two years of its existence, surpassing the legacy domain .BIZ with 2.3 million registrations at the time.
The .XYZ extension has become the fifth largest gTLD, according to RegistratStats.com, following the uncontested .COM (125.2 million registrations), .NET (15.6 million), .ORG (11 million), and .INFO with 5.4 million registered names.
The dynamic growth of the .XYZ extension has been very impressive, and outdoing the .BIZ domain can be considered as a considerable achievement.
It is worth noting that .BIZ has been performing rather poorly over the recent years. In 2014, the number of names registered in this domain exceeded 3 million, but then it began to decline. One of the reasons may have been the launch of the nTLD program. Perhaps the success of new generic domains can be attributed to their use as an alternative to the .COM domain and country code TLDs. The recovery of .BIZ will surely depend on how it copes with the increasing competition from nTLDs.
In order to outperform the next domain in the ranking, .INFO, .XYZ would need to grow by over 100 percent. Another rapidly growing domain is .TOP, which currently has 1.6 million registered names.
The nTLD Program has been launched by the International Domain Authority in order to offer Internet users more choices and enhance competition online. Hundreds of new generic domains have already been made available, allowing registrants to obtain more relevant and memorable Internet addresses.
