The not-for-profit registry of the .ORG domain has announced the Sunrise Phase for three new IDNs beginning 22 April. During this initial period qualified trademark holders can submit applications to register their domain names under equivalents of .ORG in non-Latin-based scripts. The three INDs are: .संगठन (in Devanagari), .орг (in Cyrillic) and .机构 (in simplified Chinese). Open registration will commence on 27 May.
The new domains will greatly enhance the way organisations and institutions communicate their objectives and will increase their online visibility among audiences that use these popular scripts.
By using internationalised scripts, it will be easier to brand pertinent websites as well as reach relevant audience on both local and global scales.
According to the current statistics, approximately:
- “143.5 million people in Russia use Russian Cyrillic as the official alphabet for their national language
- 497 million people speak Hindi as a first language and 120 million as a second language
- 1.4 billion people speak and write in some form of Chinese”.
There are 11 IDNs available for user adoption supported by the .ORG Registry. The languages include Danish, Swedish, German, Hungarian, Polish, Spanish and other.
To register a domain name under the .ORG extension or any other domain name, please enter your desired name in the box to check if it is available.
