General Policy for Egyptian Domain .EG

General Rules:

• Registering an Egyptian domain name gives a registrant an exclusive license for using that specific domain name for a period of time. Registration is not equivalent with legal or intellectual property rights for that domain name.
• Disputes for .EG domain name registration are not handled by the Egyptian Domain Authority.
• The Egyptian Domain Authority shall not be a party to any legal disputes arising from domain content.
• The Egyptian Domain Authority’s approval of an application for a .EG domain name does not mean the acceptance of documents attached to the registration form.
• The website pointed by a .EG domain name shall not be used in any way against traditional and conventional ethics.
• The website pointed by a .EG domain name cannot be used in any way to offend any moral entities, religions, countries or cities.
• Trading of registered .EG domain names is not allowed (leasing or selling).
• Egyptian Domain Authority reserves the right to cancel registration of any domain name if any violation of the rules or policies of domain name registration has been discovered.
• Any changes in the technical or administrative information related to .EG domain name registration should be promptly reported to the Egyptian Domain Authority.

Rules for .EG domain name selection:

• An Egyptian domain name can consist of letters (A-Z) or number (0-9) without spaces in-between.
• A domain name can consist of the minimum of 2 and the maximum of 22 characters.
• A domain name should be based on an applicant’s name or type of work and cannot be a general name. Supporting documents should be presented for verification.
• For trademark registration, trademark ownership documents should be provided and further validated by the Egyptian authorities.

• An Egyptian domain name cannot denote any names of prophets, religious slogans, names of countries or cities and moral entities.

Rules for .EG Domain Name Registration:

• Registration is conducted on a “first come, first served” basis.
• Domain name can be registered for the active websites or sites under construction.
• Companies and organizations that do not have headquarters in Egypt can register a .EG domain name on condition that they have a local representative or recognized agent present in Egypt. Web Solutions’ further offer Local Proxy Service to businesses and organizations without local presence.
• Egyptian domain names can be registered for the period of 1 year, 2 years, 3 years or 5 years.

Documents required for registration under different .EG sub-domains:

.COM.EG – for commercial sectors

A copy of business registration documentation and the company’s taxation card.

.ORG.EG – for non-governmental organizations

A copy of the institution’s bylaws or articles of incorporation.

.NET.EG – for IT organizations

A copy of business registration documentation and the company’s taxation card.

.EDU.EG – for education sectors

A copy of official documentation evidencing the organization’s compliance with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research or the Ministry of Education.

.SCI.EG – for scientific sectors

A copy of official documentation evidencing the organization’s compliance with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research or any institution affiliated with the Ministry.

.GOV.EG – for government sectors

A copy of official documentation evidencing the organization’s affiliation with a governmental organization or the ministries.

.MIL.EG – for military sectors

.INFO.EG – for information sector

Documentation pertinent to the specialization of an information company.

.TV.EG – for visual media sector

1. The Egyptian TV channels must provide an official document from the Egyptian Radio and Television Union stamped with the official seal with the government’s logo verifying the company’s compliance.
2. Private Egyptian TV channels must provide a letter with an official seal with the government’s logo from the Authority of Investment for private Egyptian TV channels (composed of companies).
3. For non-Egyptian TV channels operating via the satellite, registration will be based on license agreement.

.SPORT.EG – for sportive sector

.NAME.EG – for personal domains

Second level domain registration requirements:

• An entity registering an .EG domain name should hold the Egyptian nationality.
• An entity registering an .EG domain name is required to have residency in Egypt and not just a representative/agent in Egypt.

• An entity registering an .EG domain name should have a trademark registered in Egypt via the Egyptian Trademark Registry or WIPO.

• An entity registering an .EG domain name should provide documentation verifying the possession of the trademark.
• A registered second level .EG domain name cannot be a name reserved by the Egyptian Domain Authority.
• Second level domain registration is not available for individual names.
• The general rules for selecting an .EG domain name apply to the selection of second level domain names.
• Registrant should only provide documents pertaining to the category of institutions that a given entity belongs to.
• The registered second level domain name should only be used within the entity’s scope of activities. The domain must not be be sold to any institution unless it is related to the registered entity.
• The rules for registering domain names under .EG domain apply to the second level domain name registration.

Termination of an Egyptian domain name:

• A domain name can be invalidated in case of non-payment of fees.
• A domain name can be invalidated upon registrant’s request.
